Wabi-sabi is a traditional Japanese aesthetic that embraces becoming over being, subtle flaws over perfection, modest quiet over glaring loudness. It sounds pretty much like the antithesis of “Western” aesthetics from classical Greek monumentalism to today’s colorful glossy advertisements.
I have been reading The New Yorker ($112/yr international) for almost a year now. I love the refreshing mix of serious world issues, cultural commentary, and comics. The issues arrive exactly a week late, so here is a small sampler from last week’s Talk of the Town section:
I’m really not a fan of picking other people’s hard work, mostly because I make things myself and know how hard it is to get things right. But seeing such blatant typographic ignorance from a signage-maker (of all things!) makes me cry inside:
